The backing up of data has always been important however many schools are not aware if this is happening properly or that their backups are actually of any use in a loss situation. Today schools are looking for even more… not just backup but true disaster recovery and off-site options.

In a traditional situation tapes schedule a complete backup of everything once per week and incremental backups each day in between. Incremental backups backup what has changed each day since the last complete backup. So if you have a large file on Monday which is slightly changed, on Tuesday the backup will take a copy of the whole file again, because it has changed. However block level backup will only copy the precise changes dramatically reducing file size. Because they are significantly smaller it means that block level backups can be taken more often making your data more secure and your likely losses much less. 

DPM's ability to use block level change backup methods also means that we can provide Disaster Recovery plans for virtual environments. This is because entire servers can be backed up quickly and regularly. In the event of total failure a backed up virtual server can be quickly restored reducing downtime for the school.
